Belonging & Engagement Core Committee (BECC)

 

Charge

  • The BECC works across AAI committees and leadership to ensure that:
    • AAI membership, volunteer roles, and leadership are representative of the individuals that comprise the broader immunology community.
    • 快活视频 a welcoming organization, and all members have access to enrichment programs, recognition, and service opportunities.
  • The BECC develops programs to move the immunology community towards being representative of the patients and stakeholders served by our science.
  • The BECC partners with the LDNC to identify and fill gaps in representation in AAI leadership and volunteer roles across a broad spectrum of employment sectors, as well as geographic and personal/experiential demographic categories. In this capacity, the BECC recommends candidates for AAI elected and appointed positions to the LDNC.
  • The BECC serves as the overseeing committee through which AAI affinity groups can be organized and empowered to enrich the organization.
  • The BECC develops strategies and programs for AAI to build and support a robust pipeline for a broad and inclusive workforce across immunology.

Composition
The committee consists of a maximum of 15 members, including the Chair, appointed by a process approved by the Council. Committee members serve three-year terms, staggered so that one third of the members are new each year.

Examples of Ongoing Work

  • Serve as a resource to help ensure that all AAI committees and programs are inclusive and foster a welcoming environment, especially for individuals from underrepresented groups, by providing guidelines and tested techniques that support respectful and meaningful member experiences and interactions.
  • This committee embodies the principle that diverse voices enrich and advance science, and establishes, communicates, and implements strategies for achieving excellence across AAI science through the inclusion of diverse voices.
  • Advise the LDNC, with recommendations of candidate types that broaden representation across critical communities.
  • Incorporate data-driven approaches to inform the LDNC and other AAI committees with guidance and tools to achieve inclusivity and promote diversity of voices in AAI programs and activities.
  • Collaborate with relevant AAI committees and member groups to shift member perception of AAI Awards and honors programs from insular to transparent and inclusive. This work should be informed by learnings from groups that use holistic review practices in their Awards nomination and review practices to consider candidates lived experiences along with their stellar scientific achievements.
  • Oversee the activities of the MAC, CSOW, and future AAI affinity groups (note: scientific interest groups are overseen by the MCCC).
  • Collaborate with the developers and implementers of AAI events and programs to ensure that AAI offerings are welcoming and inclusive for all members of the immunology community.

Expected Member Time Commitment

  • Members are expected to participate in 1-2 virtual committee meetings annually, and an in-person meeting at the AAI Annual Meeting.
  • Asynchronous subcommittee work is estimated to be 1-2 hours per month.
  • Committee members are expected to serve a 3-year term.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Committee members should be familiar with AAI Membership opportunities.
  • Committee members should be representative of AAI members across a broad spectrum of employment sectors, as well as geographic and personal/experiential demographic categories.
