Science & Education Core Committee (SECC)
Charge
- The SECC is responsible for all AAI scientific and educational programming, except for the AAI Annual Meeting.
- The SECC oversees all AAI-provided programming including the AAI courses, digital learning programs, and webinars.
- The SECC also oversees AAI scientific and educational outreach efforts, including curriculum development, teaching initiatives, and external relations initiatives that are scientific or educational in nature.
- The SECC is the Core Committee home to education-oriented AAI member groups
Composition
The committee consists of a maximum of 15 members, including the Chair, appointed by a process approved by the Council. Committee members serve three-year terms, staggered so that one third of the members are new each year.
Examples of Ongoing Work
- The SECC serves as the Core Committee home for the Immunology Teaching Interest Group, a connected community of immunology educators who address issues related to the teaching of Immunology
- The SECC oversees and ensures successful execution of current AAI courses (Introductory Course, Advanced Course, and Introduction to Computational Immunology Course); digital learning programs; webinars; curriculum development (internal to AAI and external); teaching initiatives such as the High School Teachers Program; and external relations initiatives that are scientific or educational in nature such as domestic and international outreach programs.
- SECC members evaluate current offerings and potential new programs to ensure that they are reflective of the field as a whole and meet the needs of the membership and organization.
- The SECC will collaborate with individual course directors and program chairs; the Immunology Teaching Interest Group; and other individuals or groups as needed in completing its charge.
- This committee embodies the principle that diverse voices enrich and advance science. The committee partners with BECC to ensure that the breadth of the immunology community is represented among event and program participants.
Expected Member Time Commitment
- Members are expected to participate in 2-4 virtual committee meetings per year, and an in-person meeting at the AAI Annual Meeting.
- Asynchronous and subcommittee work is estimated at 1-3 hours per month.
- SECC members are expected to serve a 3-year term.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
- SECC members should represent broad knowledge of immunology, teaching experience at various levels (undergraduate, medical, and graduate), and different institution types, both teaching-focused and research-focused.
